# ECHO Science Spotlight: Explore Centripetal Force at Home with ECHO!

Have you ever thrown your spare change into a coin whirlpool like the one we used to have in the endow shop class at ECHO ? When you put a coin in this, the mint spins around and around until finally it reaches the bottom and goes through the hole in the center. This coin is demonstrating centripetal push. While an object moves ascribable to speed, or it ’ south accelerate in a certain direction, centripetal effect is the force that keeps the object motivate in a circular path. It ’ randomness centripetal because the coerce is always being pulled towards the center of the circle. Since we live on Earth, objects are besides going to have other forces acting on them, like friction and gravity. The penny makes its way to the hole because clash slows it down. If you were to observe this penny in space, it would good keep moving in a circle ! Materials: Wine glass or wide talk glaze, marble or small ball. Directions: Put the marble inside the wine glass and spin the marble around. now try putting your handwriting on the mouth of the looking glass and turning it top down. Keep your hand on the mouth of the glaze as you begin to spin the ball again. When the ball is moving inside the glass, remove your hand, but keep spin, and watch centripetal military unit in natural process !

How it Works: While inside the glass, the marble is creating an outbound “ pushing ” impel against the glass. The glaze is providing an inbound “ pushing ” effect that keeps the marble move in a circular movement. Centripetal force will keep the ball following this wind path. however, gravity is however the superscript effect and when you stop spinning the glass or slow down, the ball will finally fall out !
